TAKE MY HAND AND DANCE WITH ME Let’s celebrate for the world to see We’ll have a lifetime to make our history The Institute was quieter than usual. You would think that with the many residences it’s been holding, the place would be more lively, but no, not now. Now, at nearly ten o’clock in the evening, everyone was out and about; hunting demons, off on business, out with company, whatever. This was a good thing, because Carter was feeling slightly more rebellious than usual, which is why he’d called Allison, picked her up, and brought her back here with him. Mr. Midwinter would have had a cow if he caught him sneaking in his mundane girlfriend, and Carter knew this, which made the game all the more enjoyable to play. He couldn’t say why, but when he was showing off to Allie, he felt slightly less like himself; more bold than usual, more out of tune with everyone else. He liked that feeling, liked to feel invincible, which is why nearly all his time was spent with her. He felt on cloud nine with her next to him, running down the streets of New York City to avoid the oncoming rain, dashing in and out of cars. By the time they’d reached the Institute front doors, they were both soaking wet and laughing. Politely, he offered her his jacket, though he doubted it would emit any sort of heat, and walked her inside.
He remembered showing her the Institute for the first time; remembered seeing her face light up like the brightest angel on top of a Christmas tree. He’d been happy she accepted the place, the place he could confidently call home, other than Idris. Right now, he was more concerned about getting her out of the rain. Hand in hand, he escorted her to the elevator which would bring them up to the top floor, the living area. The rickety steel cage closed behind them and with an ancient moan, the elevator was on its way. He caught a glimpse of them in the elevator’s mirror, looking all dark, miserable, and wet. It made him chuckle and he gestured towards the mirror when he asked jokingly, “Don’t we look stunning?”
He of course thought that no matter the situation, Allison looked stunning. She could come to him covered in mud and ash and he’d still think her beautiful. Call him pathetic, but he’s in love. What’s a guy to do? Looking at them side by side in the mirror made him happy, but that happiness disappeared into worry when he felt how cold she was. Seconds turned into minutes by the time the elevator came to the top floor. As he suspected, the hallways were empty and this made him very grateful. “I don’t know if you’re keen on borrowing my cousin’s clothes, but at least let me get you a towel,” he said and led her slightly down the hall and to the infirmary. There were plenty of spare towels and blankets there and with a start, he spotted a fuzzy blanket and picked it and a towel for himself. He quickly dried his mane of gold hair and then draped the blanket around Allison’s shoulders. “Better?” he asked, his concerned golden eyes scanning hers for an answer. He rubbed her shoulders, stimulating the heat from the fuzziness to kick in. There was only one room that was warm all the time, no matter the coldness of the outside. The Greenhouse. He smiled brightly and took her hand. Did he feel bad for dragging her all over the Institute? A little, but she’d thank him later, he was sure. Walking up the stairwell to the Greenhouse was helping the chill tremendously. It seemed that with each step, the humidity kicked in, brought on by the growing plants. On the last step, Carter hit the realization that he’d never shown Allie the Greenhouse; it’d just never come up in conversation, he supposed. He grinned and pulled her in front of him, wrapping an arm around her waist and holding the other hand to cover her eyes. “No peeking,” he said playfully. When he was certain she wasn’t peeking—he made sure by checking more than once—he opened the door only to be hit with the fresh garden-y smell. Even he was a little surprised to see all the flowers in full bloom, in an array of blues, reds, oranges, and purples; vines dangling from the ceiling and potted plants nearly outgrowing their confines. He removed his hand from her eyes and took hold of her shoulders tenderly, whispering in her ear, “Go ahead and open your eyes.” [/blockquote][/blockquote] --- Word Count: seven six four Notes: Greenhouse = romance, apparently xD Carter’s so cliché that he’s cute. The New York City streets were as busy as ever. It didn't matter that it was poring rain or that it was almost ten in the evening, people were still out, lives were still being lived. Nighttime and rain never stopped the regular mundane world, and it didn't seem to stop the magical world either. Allison, being somewhat in the middle of those two worlds, was also up and out, currently running down the streets with her boyfriend, trying to avoid the rain the was simply unavoidable. Getting soaked didn't really bother her much at the time. It was just water, it would dry. Later, however, she would feel much differently, but she didn't feel like focusing on that right now, she was having too much fun with Carter to care.
As they approached the doors, Allison felt the familiar, overwhelming feeling that came with suddenly going from the mundane world to the magical one. However, like she often did, she was able to suppress this feeling because she was with Carter. Seeing how much he loved this place always made her feel more comfortable. So, instead of looking overwhelmed, she was easily able to laugh along with him. She smiled and even blushed a little as Carter put his jacket over she shoulders. Even after a year, the little things like that still made Allison slightly flustered. She hoped he couldn't see the redness that had suddenly appeared on her cheeks as he walked her inside.
Carter's hand felt warm around hers as he escorted her to the elevator. Every time Allison and Carter rode on it together, she always was a little bit nervous that it was going to break, seeing as it seemed ancient, but every time it was able to take her safely to her destination, so her worries about it now were only fleeting compared to the first time. In the elevator, she laughed at Carter's comment referring to their appearance in the mirror. "Oh, absolutely," she joked. "We look so fabulous, it's almost sinful!"
As the elevator ride progressed, Allison became quite cold. The heat from running had worn off and all she was left with was the chill from her wet clothes and hair. Finally, the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened to reveal a beautiful hall. Allison, who couldn't help but be slightly memorized by the amazing architecture, almost didn't even notice that Carter had spoken for a second. She shrugged in response. At this point she didn't really care if she borrowed his cousin's clothing. As long as they were dry and they fit well enough, they would do for now. However, borrowing clothes or not, a towel sounded nice.
Allison waited while Carter picked out a towel and a blanket. She watched as he dried his hair, restraining herself from reaching out and twirling her fingers in his golden locks. One thing Allison loved about Carter was his hair, it was almost to beautiful to be human. But then again, when Allison really thought about it, Carter wasn't one hundred percent human, was he?
She smiled as Carter wrapped a blanket around her and began to rub her shoulders to warn her up. Allison nodded when he asked if it was better. She grabbed the sides the the blanket and closed them around her. When she had a fairly good grip on both she let one hand go, which Carter then took with a bright smile. She raised her eyebrow a little, wondering what he was smiling about, but let him take her wherever it was that he was possibly taking her.
When they began walking up a flight of stairs, Allison felt humidity hit her. The chill began to slip away as they walked higher and higher up the stairs. She couldn't think of what was possibly giving off this heat, but whatever it was, she was glad it was there. On the last step, when the heat had completely taking away the wet chill, Carter pulled Allison in front of him, wrapping an arm around her waist and covered her eyes. He told her not to peak, which, of course, made her want to peak. Allison tried to move her head so she could see around his hand, but failed. After a moment she gave up and waited to see what Carter wanted to show her. Then, Allison heard the door in front of them open and Carter guided her forward.
They were instantly hit with the fresh smell of flowers and plants. She struggled to look past his hand, failing once more. She didn't have to wait long though, because a moment later, Carter removed his hand and told her to open her eyes. Her eyes snapped open so fast, that she thought for a second she was imagining the scene in front of her. She blinked a few times, trying to clear her vision, but every time she opened her eyes, she saw the same scene. Her mouth opened as if she was going to say "wow". She took a few steps forward, scanning the entire room as she did so. She had never seen anything like this. It was so colorful and breathtaking, she almost couldn't believe what she was seeing was real. "Wow, it's just..." she trailed off, her voice mystified. She looked back to Carter with a big smile on her face. "Wow," she said again. TAKE MY HAND AND DANCE WITH ME Let’s celebrate for the world to see We’ll have a lifetime to make our history Carter could tell she was spooked from the elevator, afraid of its antiquity, awaiting for it to plummet them down. He knew the feeling well; he’d been coming to this Institute ever since he was a child and he still felt as if he were going to fall from time to time. But for all his worrying, it managed to accommodate their needs each time and his father told him that it’d been the same when he was a child, so Carter found there was nothing wrong with it. Besides, it wouldn’t have been very fair if the elevator got renovated and the rest of the Institute didn’t. The ancient moans and peeling wallpapers all added to its character, made it feel more familiar and timeless, like it could last forever. He heard her laugh at his remark and he smiled. She had a very contagious laugh, he’d come to realize. She remarked about how looking so fabulous could be sinful and unintentionally, his mind went elsewhere. He imagined the most beautiful of demons, a woman which he’d encountered before. He remembered her being so breath-taking and yet so benevolent. It was frightening, that beauty could kill. He wanted to keep his mind away from such things now. So he kissed her lightly on the head and said, “You more than I.”
Which he believed was true in every way. She’d shrugged, which meant she’d gotten used to his cousins and their residency here. It’d been hard to explain at first, how this was essentially his home and yet he did not live here. She’d picked it up quickly though, so quickly, in fact, that Mr. Midwinter would have undoubtedly praised her for it with that booming, proud voice of his. She perked up at the idea of having a towel and Carter was slightly relieved. Lillian would have had a fit if he went into her room unannounced while she wasn’t home and though he’d deal with it whilst in Allison’s presence; he received the brunt of it after she left. At least his cousin was considerate enough not to make him look like a fool in front of his girlfriend. That was always nice. And so a blanket was what she got and he a towel, for he was used to feeling cold after all the hard nights of hunting. A towel was all he needed. Glad that she trusted him enough to let him haul her to a mysterious part of the building, Carter kept her close. They’d be to the stairwell soon. An eyebrow rose and Carter chuckled. She was another one who could do that. Carter only could when he wasn’t paying attention or trying reverently to. He chuckled lightly as she tried to pry his hand from her eyes. She ought to know it was useless by now; Carter was naturally strong, but his stubbornness seemed to add to his strength ten fold. Carefully, he opened the door and guided her through. She seemed curious enough and deep down, Carter knew this was a bad idea to show her a bit of Idris, but he wasn’t thinking too hard on it. Even if it was a small part of Idris, it was only a greenhouse and he knew she’d love it and be warmed by it; that was his reasoning for being here, nothing more. He watched with some amusement as her eyes snapped open on his command. She blinked a few times and Carter suspected that this wasn’t what she was expecting. For him, it was natural to expect a greenhouse up here, but she probably thought the stairwell an exit to the roof. Her mouth opened excitingly as she took a few steps forward to examine everything. Carter followed her, following her gaze to all the different flowers and plants she was looking at. He could name all of them as they looked at them. It came naturally now. She looked back at him with a big smile on her face and Carter decided that all the trouble he was going to be in eventually was worth it. “Wow, it’s just…wow,” she said, not quite knowing how to express her thoughts. He smiled back and stood next to her. “Our greenhouse,” he said in a chipper voice as if he were introducing the two. “The warmest place in the Institute. Lucky for us, the flowers are in full bloom.” Carter watched her look around, found himself lost in her wonder. He looked to the ground for a brief moment and then back at her with a kind gaze. He offered his hand to her and gestured to a small patch of grass a little ways to the side. “Lie with me,” he said softly. With no one around, they could lie down for hours if that be their wish. It was Carter’s. It wasn’t often the two of them were truly alone like this, not even on dates, for they were in public surrounded by her kind and the residents of the Down World. For once, he wanted it to be truly one on one, with no one to watch or judge them. To just lie beside her and think of nothing but how close she was, how real she was and think of how nothing else mattered.
