“Sorry, Chairman. I can’t sit down with you right now,” Kael said as he paced around the house. While Daddy numbers one and two were away for the weekend—though with how much quality time they’ve missed together, Kael suspected it’d be longer—he figured that now was as good a time as any to throw a party.
And so that’s exactly what he decided to do at five o’clock this morning.
Excitement ran throughout his system like little electrical pulses. Kael had attended many parties before, some his fathers’ and some not, but this would be one of the few parties that he would host…and get away with it. Assuming, there was no drunken vampire at the end of the night. They tended to be wordy when no one wanted them to be. Damn tattle-tales.
Return to present time and Kael counted out the bottles of liquor Magnus had stored in the kitchen for such occasions. With an impressed whistle, he grinned and stacked them against the deteriorating brick walls of the apartment. Daddy number two—aka Mommy, aka Alec Lightwood—always chided Magnus about the untidiness of the apartment, but no matter how many times the latter promised to fix it up, something else just always needed to be done and then he’d forget about it. Kael was thankful he always forgot about it. Now if someone blew a hole in the wall, he could say, “but Dad, it was already there” and totally get away with it.
Chairman Meow was being a persistent little S.O.B. by the time Kael conjured up a mini bar. He rubbed against the boy’s legs and purred quite loudly. Having second thoughts, Kael picked up the chubby guy and held him at the crook of his neck. “You’re only getting this because I’ll be ignoring you for the next few hours,” he told the cat. Apparently, His Highness had enough of being pet because a few minutes later, he jumped out of Kael’s arms and onto the floor with an impressive “thud.” Kael shrugged him off; there was a party to prepare for.
Skip ahead and few hours and Kael was completely done decorating—with minimal effort, of course. He designed it to look like an industrial club: with steel countertops and shutters (which also blocked out the sun in case a few stranglers came), gray matted sofas and a neon sign in front of the bar. The dance floor, or what was once the living room, was completely cleared out and over it lay a concrete base. A Fey DJ was setting up in the corner by the time Kael decided he was finished.
Now Skip ahead precisely one hour and twelve minutes—he was only counting because he had nothing better to do—and the first of guests started pouring in. Kael grinned. Magnus said he couldn’t throw a big party, well, how about them apples? Guests poured in like fluid water and by the time the bar was full, the dance floor was crowding up. Kael went around, greeting and meeting (considering he didn’t know half these people, but what the hell, a party’s a party, right?), having a blast already. As to be expected, everyone else was, too.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #f1f1f1] come to wonderland where never, never finds you, your one enchanted night of dreams disguised in swirling lights
There would be no training today, Not with Magnus and Alec gone. There wouldn’t be training all weekend, and maybe longer. Daegan wasn’t exactly sure if he should be happy of this fact or not. He’d been with the Banes since he was 18, so for four, nearing five years, he’d been training under the watchful eye of Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood, and alongside of a certain Kael Bane, their adopted son. Naturally, the longer he was training, the more intense his training was. And it wasn’t as though he didn’t like training....and it wasn’t as though he wasn’t good at it. It just made him nervous sometimes. It felt so wrong to use his powers, make them do something strange, something big. He’d spent the majority of his life making sure that no one else ever noticed the strange green sparks that covered his hands when he was angry, or the matching green skin in patches all over his body. They simply weren’t normal. He wasn’t used to being allowed to be anything other than normal.
He was sitting in the old lounge chair he’d got at a rummage sale--one of the only pieces of furniture in his smallish apartment--feet pulled up in the chair, hugging his knees to his chest. Dae was attempting to interest himself with whatever was playing across the screen of the tiny television in front of him, but his most valiant efforts were failing. He glanced around his apartment, it was sparse, not something that he minded really, he wasn’t high maintenance, and he was happy with the place. Mostly because he’d managed to provide a lot of the things in it for himself. Magnus and Alec paid rent for the three rooms that made up his apartment and had offered to fill it. With a bed, couch, TV, whatever he needed, but he could only take so much without feeling like a charity case, so they’d let him scrounge up something for himself, and he felt that he’d done reasonably well. He looked back down as his phone buzzed, and picked it up from the arm of the chair. He read the text grinning. Kael was throwing a party, and if it was anything like his dad’s, it would be wicked. He didn’t send anything back, knowing that anyone who’d invite him to a party realized that he’d be there...no matter what. Instead he set the phone on the counter that separated the living room area from the kitchen nook of his home.
The phone was one of the few things that Magnus and Alec provided for Daegan despite his protests, they insisted that he needed one so they could get in touch with him whenever they needed it, and his grudgingness at them paying for it had ebbed away slowly. It was just how things were now. A part of him told Dae that money wasn’t a big deal for the Banes. With two warlocks in the family, it was essentially a non-issue. That was the part of him that had happily agreed to let them pay for his wardrobe, which at Dae’s request, was mostly taken care of by Alec, who would no doubt be able to cater to Daegan’s tastes a little better than Magnus, though, standing in front of his closet now, he was pretty sure that Magnus’d had a hand in some clothing selection, as had Isabelle. He pulled a few things out of the closet, slipping on jeans and a shirt with sleeves long enough to cover his snake skin, before adding a pair of leather fingerless gloves that concealed what was left. It made him look semi-normal.
By the time Dae got across the street to the high warlock’s loft, there were already people piling in the door and music blaring. The inside was fantastic, as per usual. It was seemingly similar to the parties Magnus threw on a regular basis. Kael had obviously been working on it all day, and he’d done a good job of things too. Bright blue eyes scanned the crowd, spotting Kael by the edge of the dance floor. He was facing the other way, but Dae could tell it was him, by his hair, his back, by the way he stood. He spent a fair amount of time staring at the boy, to be entirely honest. And his magic wasn’t the only thing Dae had been studying. It had taken him a while to get used to the Banes, but once he did.....Kael had been drawing his attention more and more. So now he maneuvered in between people, skirting around a crowd of gyrating Fey until he got to Kael. ”Very nicely done.” |

Kael was thoroughly enjoying his many companions. Currently, he was talking to a very pretty vampire girl who was talking about all different drinks she could make with spiked blood. Sure, it wasn’t his topic of choice, but it did interest him. He laughed, he joked, hell, he even flirted. Tonight was going smoothly, but Kael couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. As the vampire girl waved goodbye to go to the bar, a Fey took her place and Kael wanted to scowl, but did not. Fey were all right, he supposed, but not his first choice of party guests. Why did he invite them again? Even as he talked to this fellow—who turned out to be rather interesting despite Kael’s previous thoughts—he still felt as if something was missing, something he’d overlooked.
A certain, familiar voice made its way into Kael’s ears. Ah, of course! Daegan had been the one missing. Thinking back on it, Kael wondered idly if he even sent the boy an invitation. Obviously, he did, as he was currently standing right in front of him. If he hadn’t sent an invitation, surely Daegan could have put two and two together upon noticing the party across the street. As he complimented Kael on his job well done, the latter boy smiled brightly. “Dae! You made it! Now it’s a party,” he grinned.
And then he noticed the hand on his shoulder. It didn’t bother him, but it felt…different than how it usually felt. Dae had been living across the street for a few years now, training alongside Kael himself, spending much time with the Bane family. Kael would never say he minded it. If anything, the boy made the training more interesting, however one-sided this interest was. Kael would catch glimpses of him, catch him looking back, and although he’d done nothing wrong, Kael would have the urge to apologize, but why should he? Was staring at beauty such a crime?
Hold it. Did he just indirectly call Dae beautiful? Taking a good look at him now, Kael couldn’t deny this inner statement. He looked him up and down, noticing the clothing (which Alec most likely picked out. Kael could tell because of the bland colors. Surely, Kael was wearing something less flashy than normal too, but he had the decency to at least borrow some of Magnus’ glitter) he chose to wear, noticing how it stuck to him at places. He grinned, very much liking what he saw. And then he noticed the gloves. This caused him to sigh. “I know you’re not used to the wild side yet, Dae, but at least take off your gloves,” he said and then forcefully took them off for him, seeing as he doubted Daegan would do it himself. “There’s nothing to hide here, you know. I mean, look at him. If he isn’t a sight for sore eyes, I don’t know what is.” Kael pointed to an imp with red skin, three horns on his head, and big feet. Apparently, said imp heard him and growled and Kael, cutely innocently, offered a wave and a smile.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #f1f1f1] come to wonderland where never, never finds you, your one enchanted night of dreams disguised in swirling lights
It had taken Dae a while to get used to all this. The downworlder stuff, that is. He’d grown up around painfully normal people, mundanes, he’d learned that they were called. And he couldn’t help but agree with the name. Sure, he never really thought of himself as anything special either, but those that he’d lived around the bronx...they were ompletely and entirely mundane. It had been quite a relief to know that there were people more like him and less like everyone else. That was why he’d never get tired of being in the middle of a room like this. It had scared him the first time or two, his first encounter with a vampire, the first time he’d been hit on by a fey, asked to dance by a werewolf. It had all been entirely disconcerting. Of course, there was no one exactly like him, but if anyone could come close to making Dae feel like he understood, it was the boy in front of him.
Kael wasn’t like him. Not in a bad way, but in a way that he found himself easily relating too. Of course, Kael was the only person that knew his entire history, other than Alec and Magnus, of course. They’d both been cast off by their mothers, something that Dae spent most of his time pretending it didn’t matter. Then they’d been spending an unbelievable amount of time together over the last couple years, and he couldn’t deny that he’d been enjoying it. It was nice to have someone to train with, not to be in it by himself. Of course, Dae’s powers were nothing compared to Kael’s well....at least his control over them were nothing. Dae didn’t even know the extent of his powers the way that his training partner did, his biggest obstacle was letting it loose, it scared him too much. He never had the problem of using too much energy though. Of course...he didn’t accomplish a lot either.
”Of course I did, if your parties are anything like your dad’s....” |
Dae grinned back at Kael, not able to keep himself from taking a good look at him. He was admittedly guilty of taking advantage of being around him all the time. He’d find himself constantly caught up, marveling at his jaw line, entranced the angle of his nose, taken aback by the flash of reptilian eyes when he was emotional, or training hard. It’d had taken a while for him to accept that he was attracted to Kael, but now he had, and he was going on with things, because being attracted to him didn’t mean anything, especially not that he felt the same way. He looked down, slightly abashed as Kael scolded him for his gloves. He couldn’t help but attempt to cover up what he’d spent so long regarding as in irregularity, no matter how the two warlocks he spent nearly every day with tried to convince him. ”But I--” he started, but Kael had already taken his hand, tugging off one glove before switching to the other. He grabbed the gloves back from Kael, but didn’t put them back on, placing them in his blazer pocket instead. He ran a thumb over the back of his other hand, grimacing slightly at the slick scaly skin there. ”sorry...” he murmured softly. He knew they didn’t like for him to cover his skin, but he tugged his shirt down, over the strip of skin it had been revealing, skin that faded from creamy pale into a harsh green. He glanced over at the now angered imp before shooting a scolding look at Kael. It wasn’t very effective though, tained by the laugh that he couldn’t resist letting out. ”Very smooth.” he commented, subconciously running his tongue over the inside of the two blue posts sticking out of either side of his bottom lip. Kael laughed. “Of course it's like Dad’s. I learn from the best.” He did learn from the best, didn’t he? He learned everything from Magnus and Alec, when the latter wasn’t killing demons late at night. It was a job that Kael never liked him doing and he remembered a time where he would beg Alec to stay home. Alec always said he couldn’t, of course, for that was his job and Kael couldn’t help but distrust the Clave for putting his daddy in danger. Even now, as he slightly aged, he couldn’t bring himself to fully rely on the Clave. Alec had tried to tell him to not think of them as the bad guys, but after everything they’d done—which Magnus, admittedly, told him about—and after all the danger they’d force both his guardians into, Kael couldn’t accept them as anything more than antagonists.
At least Daegan was never in any real danger, not by the Clave anyway. There was the issue of controlling his powers, but Kael needed some work on that, too, especially when he grew angry; poor Chairman was shaved bald once via Kael’s rage and it hadn’t been a pretty sight. Kael vaguely remembered the day that Daegan arrived on their doorstep and he only remember vaguely because it was a day neither boys considered their happiest. Kael, at the time, hadn’t been all that thrilled to have a new study buddy, but looking back on it now, he supposed he felt more angry to see him upset.
But seeing him enjoy himself at this party, particularly when he didn’t argue about the removal of his gloves, made it all worth it. No matter how many years in the mundane world he spent, Dae had to know that he belonged here; that’s all Kael wanted to get through to him. He was apart of the Downworld, belonged at this party, in this loft, and eventually—with all of Kael’s aspiration—to him alone. Dae mumbled an apology and Kael honestly wanted to slap him. To avoid slapping him, he watched as he rubbed his scaly skin. Kael was born with reptilian eyes and black fingernails; nothing too out of the ordinary. Most mundanes thought he painted his nails and he wore cool contacts, but Dae really had no ordinary excuse for his skin. Perhaps a rash would have worked, had the skin been red instead of a vibrant green. But Kael liked vibrant things. He wondered idly what rubbing that snakey skin felt like and instead of doing the proper thing and asking (which was so over rated), he took one of Dae’s hands in his and felt the scales. After a few awkward for Dae moments, he released his hand, smiled, and said, “Wow, it really is like a snake’s.” He hadn’t been expecting it to feel like anything else, but Kael hoped it would help his friend crawl a little out of his skin tonight.
When on the receiving ends of one of Daegan’s glares, most would falter, but Kael laughed because Dae ended up laughing himself. “It’s not like he hasn’t heard it before. ‘Sides, it’s my party, Dae. What’s he going to do? Kick me out?” He could very well, but then he’d have a visit from Magnus Bane and most didn’t appreciate it.
A fey waitress came passing by and Kael stopped her to ask for two drinks. She smiled, winked, and obliged. The liquids were a pinkish sort of color and by the aroma, Kael knew there wasn’t any blood within them, which was always a plus. It smelled heavily of vodka though and Kael knew his parents (mainly Alec) would kill him if they saw him drinking, but hey, they weren’t here and Kael wasn’t stupid enough to get drunk, so no harm done, right? It was his party after all. “Have a Screwdriver,” Kael said and handed Dae one of the glasses.

Dae grinned nodding, "of course, i wouldn't have expected anything less." |
he stated. Magnus Bane was by far the best at throwing parties, and for that matter, he was fairly fantastic at most everything else....well, maybe everything was too broad a term, but the High Warlock simply never ceased to impress Daegan. Part of that though, might be how comfortable he was with himself. It was impressive to him. To be comfortable with his powers, his presence and, something that was at times made way too clear, his body. No one that dressed like that had any self consciousness at all. But it was that same confidence that made for a party planner that had parties like these. This, the place where Dae flourished more than anywhere else. Where he surprised people, and made it clear that as odd as he was sometimes, he really could have a good time, and he really could just be happy. Just like he was happy to be here, here with Kael, specifically. "and its a good thing that i'm here too, because there's no way I'd be able to sleep with all this going on outside. The walls are too thin, and a good party is never quiet." he pointed out with a grin. That was, after all, the way that he'd ended up at his first Bane party. They'd assumed, as most people did, that he wasn't the partying type, because he was more reserved than most. So they hadn't said anything about it, not wanting him to feel like he had to come and be uncomfortable. But he'd been in his apartment when he'd heard it, and looked outside to see a line of people trying to just get into the loft for the party. He'd thrown some clothes on and wandered across the street and managed to cut the line with his connection to the host, before entering the most incredible party he'd ever attended, so he'd gotten to the point that he really did expect the best from any party at the Bane loft. And they'd grown to expect the unexpected from him, like his surprising infatuation with parties...and alcohol. Of course, Alec didn't exactly support that one. Until recently he'd been very parental about Dae drinking. Of course, he was only 18 at the time, so it wasn't technically allowed, but it also wasn't as though he didn't do it all the time anyway. Being 22 now, it wasn't a problem so much, but Alec did always seem to have the most influence over them. Maybe it was because in a way, he was more like Alec than like Magnus or Kael. While sure, Alec was Nephilim and Dae was a warlock...well, he wasn't exactly sure what it was, but Alec understood him better, especially the reserved part of him, the part of him that didn't like to talk about his mom and the part of him that hated having powers...the part of him that made him put on those gloves all the time. He told himself that he'd have taken them off himself eventually, but he was sort of happy that Kael had done it for him. He blushed a little as Kael took his hand, feeling the skin on the back of it. He nodded, "yeah...sheds like one too." he pointed out, not exactly sure why. He supposed he just felt like he needed to point out something bad about the skin, which he sort of regretted, knowing that Kael was consciously trying to make him feel more comfortable. "Only when i'm sick though...." he added. It was true, he would get sick every once in a while, sick like the flu, and his green skin would get flaky and peel off, like when a snake would shed its skin. He shrugged, part of him wanted to believe that Kael really did like the skin, he knew it was soft, it felt cool...he supposed. But he was convinced that it shouldn't be liked. not by anyone, so obviously, Kael didn't like it. Dae shook his head, still smiling from his laughter. "true, he can't kick you out of your house, but you shouldn't look down on something he can't control." he pointed out, knowing what that felt like. He was of course, not actually angry or upset with Kael, it meant a lot to him actually, that he was trying so hard. Dae just wished he was more confident about it. He smiled, nodding politely at the Fey that gave them drinks. "Don't mind if i do." he said, taking a long sip of the pinkish drink making a slight face at the sting of the vodka, but it was a feeling he'd come to like. He glanced around them at the living room turned dance floor and smirked a little, "Want to dance?" he asked, knowing deep down that it was more of an excuse to get closer to his study partner than anything else. Kael grinned. “Why, a silent party is hardly a party at all,” he agreed. Sometimes Kael wondered if Daegan ever wanted to leave the little apartment Magnus and Alec rented for him. Surely it must be bothersome sometimes to always be awoken in the night by loud Fey music, but Dae never complained; not even once. That made Kael happy. He didn’t at all want the boy to leave, but between Magnus and his parties and Alec’s parental supervision, it was miracle that he stuck around. Around such a dysfunctional family, one would have normally packed his bags and hit the road by now. However, this was Daegan Kael was speaking of, who, in all honesty, was quite dysfunctional himself. He reminded Kael of a scolded child: he behaved well, bent to the rules of whomever was addressing him, but inside of him there was this kinetic energy that was waiting to be released and go wild. Kael like that side of Dae and though he knew the boy’s past of abandonment—something both boys knew very well—Dae hardly spoke of his mundane life, at least around Kael. Though it was technically none of his business—though Kael believed it highly was—Kael couldn’t help but prod every now and then. He’d been told a minimal amount of things, like how Dae was kicked out at the age of eighteen, when his mother felt she was no longer legally responsible for him and Kael knew he once attended high school…and liked it. Kael couldn’t imagine himself in a high school. They were so grotesque with drama and terribly dull of any excitement.
He remembered the first time Daegan broke out of his mundane routine, the first Bane party he’d ever been to. Magnus was throwing it, of course, in honor of…well, Kael couldn’t remember what it was in honor of. Sometimes, Magnus threw parties like this one, in honor of boredom. It must have been something important though, because more people showed up that day than normal. Thinking too hard on it wouldn’t get Kael anywhere, so he decided to forget about it; it’d come to him eventually; it always did. Anyway, he remembered seeing Dae on the line, way in the back, waiting to be let in. He’d told Magnus and Alec and Magnus had let Daegan cut the line. The best part of this whole memory was the fact that all the other Downworlders complained when Dae cut. It was pretty funny, especially since Magnus had to threaten them to be silent.
Kael nodded as Daegan explained that his snake skin shed when he was sick. How often was he sick and he did he ever come to Magnus for help? Kael didn’t at all like the idea of Daegan being sick—unless, of course, he could nuture him back to health like in those romance movies his dad was obsessed with. A sly grin made its way across Kael’s face, but he tried his best to hide it from Dae. It was his trademark “I have an idea~!” smirk that usually was followed by trouble and/or a trip to the mall. To cover his smirk, which he’d gotten better at hiding ever since Magnus learned to recognize it, Kael said, “You know, I was thinking about getting a pet. A reptile, actually. You and I both know I get along better with those.” He let his eyes flash into a reptilian state for a moment before they returned to their usual crisp color. He smirked. “I was thinking an iguana. I already picked a name, which is the most tedious thing about getting a new pet, so I’m already half way there.”
He watched as Daegan shook his head, smiling. God, he really did have a beautiful smile. It wasn’t broken like most other peoples’; it was a truly bright smile, something Kael liked to see. But at this point, he grew a bit jealous. Dae should protect something that bright, after all. Kael should be the only one permitted to see it. He was the first to see it. “I wasn’t looking down on him, I was putting him beneath you, and so it’s your fault, really—” “And so you should stop being so attractive,” is what he wanted to say, but no, not yet. That’d be too obvious and so he let his sentence drop in the noise of the crowd.
Kael was delighted as Dae took the Screwdriver and was the first to taste it. The face he made caused Kael to laugh and when he’d calmed himself, he, too, took a swig. It really did have a strong taste, but hopefully he’d been better at hiding his slight grimace. He was delighted yet again when Dae asked him to dance, only cursing the fact that he didn’t ask first. The thought from before, which called for his trademark smirk, reentered his mind and he hid the smile he made in his glass. “I wonder,” he thought to himself tauntingly, “has Dae ever been truly wasted?” When he’d finished taking another large sip, he nodded. “Need you ask?” he asked to answer and took the lead in weaving through the crowd.

Dae smirked a little, nodding in agreement. He found it refreshing that he didn’t have to worry about his rebellious side around Kael. Actually, the boy tended to simply encourage it, which was a foreign concept for Daegan. He’d spent all of his time rebelling against his excuse for a mother and being scolded for it. So the fact that it wasn’t something he had to keep control of around here was nice. He could do what he wanted practically all the time. Of course, he did still accept the authority of Alec and Magnus, mostly because the two of them refused to allow him to try supporting himself, though he was looking for a job and was in college on financial aid. Other than feeling like he owed them his obedience in lessons at the very least, he didn’t like to do what he was told. It felt a little bit too much like giving up, so he kept fighting even though he didn’t have to anymore.
He realized a little too late that he shouldn’t have said anything about being sick, he didn’t know if that was a strange thing for warlocks or not. It hadn’t exactly come up before. He wasn’t sick very often, just a little bought of the flu every several months. He’d always been a little bit susceptive to illness. Of course...there was more than likely some sort of magic trick he could learn to make that go away. Kael didn’t say anything about it though, so he moved on. Dae grinned at the flash of Kael’s eyes, knowing exactly what he meant that he got along with reptiles better. It was interesting that both of the boys’ marks were something to do with reptiles....he was actually surprised that he hadn’t pondered that before. ”I say go for it. Having a pet would be intense.” He said nodding. ”You’ve already chosen a name?” |
he asked with a teasing smirk and a tite of his head. He’d thought about getting a pet, making him feel like he actually had some responsibility in the world beyond showing up for photography classes. His first instinct had obviously been a snake, he clearly had more of a connection with them than any other typical pet. Of course, something out of his comfort zone would have been good for him. Dae couldn’t help but grin, ”Oh, right sorry. It was clearly my fault. My wonderful face, it just forced you to insult someone.” he simpered jokingly. He didn’t typically make comments on his own appearance, mostly because he wasn’t the biggest fan of it, so those words may have been out of character for him, but he wasn’t paying attention to it. Dae shrugged, hiding a smile as Kael his his grimace and took an even longer swig of his drink, now used to the sting and refrained from making a face as it burned down his throat. He’d feel numb soon enough. He wasn’t the type to get entirely wasted on a regular basis, he had a far too high alcohol tolerance for that, but he was feeling good and wouldn’t object at all to a few too many tonight. He smirked as Kael spoke before turning to lead them through the crowd. He had the urge to place an arm around Kael’s back, resting a hand on his hip as they walked side by side, but he simply caught the boy’s wrist and followed behind him instead. As they wove through a thick section of people, Dae glanced around, finding a place that was still crowded, but with enough room for them to fit in and tugged Kael’s arm lightly to stop him. This was where things were interesting. He typically didn’t have inhibitions at parties, but he also didn’t go to them with people he knew, he’d be around strangers so he was comfortable. Kael was happy when he received an agreement from Daegan that a pet would be “intense.” Okay, truthfully, that wasn’t Kael’s first choice of wording, but it had a nice ring to it. He could imagine the look on Magnus’ face as he walked into his loft one day and saw an iguana on his sofa or in Kael’s room, staring at him like he’d been there his entire life. Magnus would flip, no doubt, even if the pet was Kael’s. He’d go off on a typical parental rant of how Kael hardly helped take care of Chairman—which was not true because cats need love the most and Kael was the only one who seemed to sit down with the cat for more than fifteen minutes at a time—and that he would probably leave his poor iguana to die—which was also not true because reptiles were his weakness and he couldn’t afford to see the iguana’s sad, hungry face.
Oh, so Dae was curious about the name he’d chosen? Well, if he thought the very idea of getting one was amusing, just wait until he heard the name Kael picked out for the poor bastard. “His—or her—name will most definitely be ‘Demigodzilla,’” he smirked. He thought it was very clever. See, iguanas weren’t nearly as huge as the real deal, so the name would only be partially based off the monster’s. Besides, with a cute face like the ones iguanas had, Kael couldn’t bear to call it monstrous.
Aw, Dae just admitted his face was wonderful. If only Kael could comment back on it. What the hell? Sure, he could. Just because you compliments someone’s face doesn’t automatically mean you’re in love with them, does it? Kael was in the process of testing the waters, seeing if Dae felt anything the same as he felt about him, but Kael, huh, Kael wanted to drag Dae off to some dark corner in the loft and smother him with passionate kisses. Instead of doing the latter and instead of dawdling over how hot and sexy it would be to drag Dae off in a corner, Kael smiled at his comment. “Of course it did. Your face is prettier than most here, Dae.” There, he said it, and it wasn’t that forward either. Actually, as Kael looked around, he realized it was fact. But then again, Daegan’s face would always be prettier in Kael’s eyes.
As they weaved through the crowd, Kael tried to find a semi-exclusive spot, a place where his party goers wouldn’t feel forced to speak with and compliment him because frankly, Kael didn’t want to hear it. Not right now, anyway. Right now, he only wanted to hear Dae’s voice, mixed in with the loud fey band of course. The other boy grabbed for his wrist and Kael had to swallow down a frown. He missed his hand. You were supposed to hold a person’s hand, not their wrist. Kael inwardly sighed. Moments later, Dae beat him to it—finding a spot—and Kael commented to himself on how nice of a spot it actually was.
He began to dance, shaking his bangs out of his face and jetting out his sexy hips to the beat and occasionally lunging to the floor when the song called for it. He watched Dae as he danced, watched how seemed to get used to the idea that yes, they were this close, and Kael wasn’t about to back off. A poor drunken fellow (who looked like a nixie, but was probably one of the Seelie Queen’s) was rampaging through the party like a lunatic and Kael couldn’t help but join in the crowd’s laughter. That is, until, said drunken fellow was brashly pushing through the crowd. Ah shit, looks like Kael’s gonna have to kick a bitch out. He hated doing that, but if he was going to hurt someone—
Like Dae. The stupid nixie-fey was headed right towards them—and where did he get that broken glass from?—and instead of doing the logical thing and using magic, Kael took the opportunity into his own hands and grabbed Dae’s wrist, pulling him closer to his body to avoid the impact. Only when Dae’s chest was nearly touching his own did Kael use magic to make a mini-portal of sorts for the fey to disappear through. The party folk cheered, but Kael took Daegan off to the side, in the kitchen, fearing that he’d grow embarrassed or was still shaken from the experience. It wasn’t a pretty thing when a nixie-fey charged at you with a broken glass bottle, even if you were a warlock. Still maintaining a relative closeness, Kael smiled and asked, “Are you all right, Dae? I’m sorry about that.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #f1f1f1] come to wonderland where never, never finds you, your one enchanted night of dreams disguised in swirling lights
Daegan snorted softly at Kael’s chosen name for his future pet. He had to admit, it was rather clever, and only someone like Kael would think to name their pet something along those lines. He’d always been a fan of the Godzilla type movies. King Kong too, the ones that revolved around the mundies being under fire from some huge beast that they didn’t stand a chance against. He didn’t have strong feelings against the mundane world, but he had to admit, that the shadow world, though not even responsible for him, had taken a lot better care of Dae over the years.
It was only later that Dae had the sense to blush over the conversation that revolved around his face. He probably wouldn’t have said what he did if he’d thought it through a little bit more, but he’d said it, and he wasn’t too particularly regretful of it. He just realized as an afterthought that he sounded a lot like he was flirting, and well….it was out of line to flirt with Kael…wasn’t it? Or maybe not. Kael was making it so easy for him to do, it felt practically natural to toss words like these back and forth with his training mate. Dae certainly didn’t mind, but there was a part of him that warned him that whatever you felt at parties, however people acted….they couldn’t be expected to be the same tomorrow, so he did what he could to enjoy this without thinking it through too much, so he simply grinned and shrugged as Kael pointed out that he had one of the prettiest faces in the room. I do what I can.” |
he joked. With all the Fey and vamps standing around, Dae couldn’t say he agreed, he found both species stunning….but then again, they didn’t compare to Kael for a second. Dae allowed himself to get lost in the music, dancing alongside Kael with equal enthusiasm, he stopped thinking about it, and that was when he got truly invested in something like this. He swayed his hips smoothly with the rhythm, using the fingers of one gloveless hand to push the hair away from his face. He wanted to reach out and do the same to Kael’s, run his fingers through the locks that were so similar to his own. He came close to doing so, but was distracted by and uproar from the crowd, revolving around some fey running about like a maniac. Dae shrugged it off and turned to see how Kael would react to such a thing. The host of the party seemed to be amused at first glance, but then something came over his face that caused Dae to turn back around, which only allowed him to see the fey charging him with the sharp side of a broken bottle before he felt himself being pulled in Kael’s direction. His heart, if possible, sped in an adrenaline type fear, fear that he wasn’t out of the way, and fear that Kael would be foolish enough to attempt to protect him with himself. Which, he had to admit, though foolish, didn’t sound entirely unfavorable. Of course, he had no need to worry, as Kael produced a portal in a flash, sending the charging fey through it and away from the two of them. As he got it into his head that he was okay, Dae noticed that he’d stepped right into Kael’s chest to get out of the way, and he couldn’t say that it was something he particularly minded. He followed easily out of the room into the kitchen through the nearby door. He was thankful for Kael’s closeness as the boy spoke, nearly in his ear. yeah, I’m fine….a little shaken, but fine.” he admitted with a confident nod. He’d seen worse in his life, that was for sure. ”what about you?” he asked, using his fingers to gently pull down on Kael’s chin so he could watch his eyes for a flash of reptilian pupils. ”that was the fastest portal conjuring I’ve ever seen.” he said with a smile. ”thanks. A small innocent blush made its way onto Dae’s face and Kael wouldn’t have noticed, had he not been intently looking at the boy for signs and gestures. It was so rose delicate, like a porcelain doll’s airbrushed cheeks and it made Kael stop dancing at stare at the boy for a minute. He didn’t know whether to like how shy it was or to dislike it because he, yet again, seemed uncomfortable with himself. The young warlock decided that it was all right to feel a little of both and in order to make himself less obvious—how was Daegan not suspicious yet?—he stopped staring and began to dance again. “I do what I can,” Dae said, sounding a little more arrogant and proud than usual. Kael laughed at his joke, liking that side of him, the bold and daring one.
He was only thankful that he’d gotten Dae out of the way in time. He didn’t know what came over him: his body just acted on its own as he raised his pointer finger and a portal appeared in his living room. Right, he still couldn’t control the entirety of his magic. Though the guests cheered, Kael could see that some of them were suspicious, even wary of him. It was liked they just realized that they were attending a party hosted by a Bane, not just any other warlock. No doubt they were concerned for themselves, wondering whether they should stay or go. Most of them decided to stay and went back to dancing as if nothing had happened and this made Kael both happy and incredulous: happy, because the party was officially far from over, despite his inability to produce the magic he wanted and incredulous because…well, who’da thunk that people would be so relaxed after a potentially dangerous situation? Kael supposed they expected him to fix whatever he started, which was exactly what he was intending to do. Starting with Daegan.
The warmness from the other boy didn’t disappear automatically like Kael would have thought it to. He stayed close, so close that they could nearly feel each other’s breath: a mix between his warm and welcoming breath and Kael’s cool and reptilian. It was a sensation that even this far away from his lips, was intoxicating, but before Kael could bring himself to do anything reckless, he’d asked the boy if he was all right and was pleased with the answer he’d received. “…a little shaken, but fine.” Kael couldn’t blame him; he’d be the same way. He wanted to put his arms around him, to stop him from trembling, but again refrained himself. He didn’t like refraining himself, but he knew of Daegan’s lack of self confidence, his lack of experience with this sort of thing, which is why he reluctantly kept his distance.
“What about you?” Daegan’d asked and Kael felt his chin being pulled down to look into Daegan’s eyes. He and Dae were nearly the same height, which didn’t happen a lot, but he realized that he’d been standing straight and unmoving while it looked like Daegan was doing all he could to support himself. He saw his reflection in the boy’s eyes, noticed how his pupils had split and how his eyes were a light green color. They were still reptilian, still ready to do harm and Kael took a deep breath to calm his nerves and return his eyes back to their mundane bluish color. He didn’t return Dae’s smile, no matter how much he wanted to. “I panicked,” he amended. “I didn’t mean to create a portal. I didn’t do that,” he said, knowing Dae would understand. Though it’d been an awesome portal, Kael knew what he’d done was risky. What if the portal had dragged the entire party with it? Dae with it? Or Kael himself with it? What if that portal was a portal to the demonic realm? Kael had no idea of knowing; he hadn’t consciously conjured it. He began to wonder where that poor Fey ended up, hoping it wasn’t somewhere he’d suffer the rest of his life. “I think this is what Magnus meant when he said, ‘The unexpected is always to be expected at a Bane party,’” he said with a small shrug and a chuckled, hoping to lighten the mood.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #f1f1f1] come to wonderland where never, never finds you, your one enchanted night of dreams disguised in swirling lights
For the most part, Kael made Dae more comfortable than most people did. They hadn’t exactly grown up with each other…they’d been way past the age that their relationship could ever be one that felt like a brother, they’d come into each others lives far too late for that kind of thing. If Dae had been kicked out younger than he was, say five or six, and found by the Banes well…things would be far different, and Kael would feel like his older brother, but as it was…that wasn’t how Dae felt about him at all. As it was, they’d been 18 and 21 when they’d met, and for the past five years…they’d been developing a relationship that…well that Dae didn’t entirely understand. It had been uneasy in the beginning, he’d felt self-conscious over the fact that Kael used his magic so openly, and the fact that all Dae ever seemed to do was stand in his own way. He’d worried for ages that Kael didn’t want him there, interrupting his life…and the fact that he was older, even if only by three years…it had terrified Daegan. Things were obviously very different between them now. Especially in the past several months. Dae was finally starting to accept the fact that he cared for Kael as much more than a training partner, much more than a friend even. The looks that Kael gave him every now and again, were only pushing this realization along. The looks where he’d keep his eyes locked with Dae’s longer than necessary, or the moments that his gaze would travel south of Dae’s face, and the younger warlock was nearly positive that Kael wasn’t listening to a word that he was saying, but couldn’t bring himself to mind. It was those moments that kept him the slightest bit hopefully that he wasn’t being freakishly foolish by thinking anything might ever happen between them. Kael would want someone more confident about themselves…and he’d be able to find someone easily, Dae was sure, it wasn’t as though Dae was the only person to notice Kael the way he did. And now, being so close to him, he nearly wished he didn’t notice Kael the way that he did. They were close because something scary had just happened, and both were recovering from it, but Dae wanted to feel like they were standing close to each other because they enjoyed being near each other. Daegan knew that he at least, was more comfortable here, with about a mere foot in between them, than he was most anywhere else…though he wouldn’t mind that foot being a quite smaller distance. He wasn’t particularly experienced with things like dating, not that he hadn’t engaged in the odd physical activity with a random stranger from time to time, when he’d managed to escape his parents into the world of mystery that a few crappy nightclubs provided. That had been different. It was a lot harder with people that he knew…people he’d see again. Just like letting loose and being himself. Green skin and all.
This was Kael though…and it wasn’t like that. He could be himself around Kael because well…he’d been practically pulled out of his shell by the hair and couldn’t allow himself to complain because it was the first time he felt okay with himself in a long time. Dae watched as Kael calmed himself, his eyes fading back to the stunning blue that he loved, though he couldn’t say he disliked the reptilian flash either. Dae nodded slightly, knowing what his training partner meant, ”even so, it took a lot of power, and it was your magic, either way.” |
he said, his eyes shining with praise. He knew what it felt like when the magic took over, losing control of it was never comfortable by any means, it could be scary, but it was a sign of the power that they’d eventually have the control to use. Dae’s smile came back as Kael lightened the mood. ”no harm, no foul” he said smoothly. ”and now perhaps the next “unexpected” will be a good thing, yeah?” he said, surprised himself at the subtly flirtatious tone of his own voice. Being this close to him made Kael remember darker times, the times in which Daegan had first been introduced to the Bane family by, well…a series of unfortunate events. He remembered Magnus showing the boy inside, talking with him one on one while Alec and Kael preoccupied themselves with fixing dinner, though why the Nephilim insisted on going to get Chinese when Kael could have simply made the Chinese come to them, he still wouldn’t understand. Maybe he was just too arrogant; people told him often that he was; but it was his arrogance that made speaking to the shy boy all the more easier. He remembered getting in Daegan’s face, to make him more uncomfortable, because that was the type of bastard he was, but he never imagined that being so close to him, back then or now, would make an impact on him.
But it did, terribly.
He never denied the fact that he looked at Dae differently than he looked at other boys. He’d always felt something. Kael couldn’t tell you when he started feeling this “something” for the other warlock, but he had indeed felt it. He didn’t always know what it was, but he felt it and in times when he couldn’t identify the feeling, it drove him mad. Actually, that’s not entirely correct, seeing as the feeling still drove him crazy; in fact so crazy that even Ashlyn had caught onto it. That was the bad part, that someone who Kael hardly spoke of his love life with could point it out. Just how unbalanced did the boy make Kael? Not unbalanced enough, obviously, because he was still standing straight as opposed to falling right in his arms like his inner child wanted to. Actually, his inner “child” was more of a “tween” and wanted to smother him with hugs and kisses…but Kael didn’t want to think about that, because then he’d actually be tempted to do it, whether Dae agreed with it or not. He’d learn: Kael’s house, Kael’s rules. Okay, okay, technically it was Magnus’ house and Magnus’ rules, but he wasn’t home at the moment, so Kael took the liberty of filling in for him.
He saw that Dae was watching as his eyes shifted color and that—oddly—put him on edge. Kael, who was the type to not care about what other people thought of him, was on edge? Blasphemy! Hell, he’d gone of the subway and walked around Coney Island in leather shorts—that’s right, leather shorts. No, Kael wasn’t the type to let other people’s judgments get the better of him, but Dae’s opinion was different. It actually mattered to him.
Dae nodded as he seemed to comprehend what Kael meant by his words. He knew he would; training side by side for years ensured this. “even so, it took a lot of power, and it was your magic, either way.” Hell yeah, it took a lot of power, so much so that Kael found himself inhaling short breaths, just to catch up to himself. He tried not to show it, tried not to give him a reason to be concerned. It was always frightening when his magic took over; it was a feeling unlike any other, like he was a simple puppet in the hands of some masterful marionette. It was…sickening, if anything. He just down right hated it, which is why he did his best to shake the feeling off as quickly as it had come. Dae smiled, again lighting up the dimly lit kitchen with just his expression. “and now perhaps the next ‘unexpected’ will be a good thing, yeah?” he asked and Kael found himself smirking. It was a rarity for Dae’s voice to sound so…flirtatious.
Kael rather liked it.
Which is why he let his hormones control his body for a change. He leaned into Daegan, catching his cheeks in a tender hold as he brought his lips to his. He didn’t know if Daegan would pull away, but sure as hell wasn’t going to give him the chance, which is why he moved his hands to his waist. He found the belt loops of his jeans and by them, pulled the other boy closer, leaving his hands to crawl up slightly under the hem of his shirt and touch the cool skin underneath. He found the reptilian skin near his hip and realized that he’d been subconsciously searching for it, longing to be the one to touch that hidden skin. Only when he absolutely had to, when his lungs were screaming for air, did he separate their lips. His closeness stubbornly remained as he grinned and asked tauntingly, “Good enough?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #f1f1f1] come to wonderland where never, never finds you, your one enchanted night of dreams disguised in swirling lights
In hindsight, maybe some of what Daegan felt about Kael had been there for a longer time than he’d imagined. It wasn’t like he had ever been around Kael without feeling uneasy. Of course…he’d always assumed that he wouldn’t like the uneasiness that came with it…until it started to draw him in even further. The discomfort that he got from being around Kael was probably a result of Kael’s tendency to see right through him, like he was a window pane. It was so disconcerting, but at the same time…how nice to have someone know you. It was like having a sheet pulled back from him every time he caught Kael’s gaze, and it was almost exhilarating to the point that Daegan couldn’t keep from thinking about it. He wanted to lock eyes with the boy again and again, blue looking into blue with nothing there but one another…as cliché and cheesy as it seemed, he could get lost in those eyes, which may have been the reason that the reptilian flash in them made him even more uneasy than it should, because the eyes that he loved would fade away, even if for a short lingering moment.
He was oddly comfortable to let the boy look back too. He didn’t usually respond well to staring, he was too self conscious for that, at least, around people that he knew or spent time with. It matter to him far too much what people thought of him, mostly because he’d been taught that he was strange from a young age, that staring was a horrible thing and it should be avoided at all costs, thus his alienation of his green skin, and the colored sparks that flew from his fingers when he used his magic. When Kael looked though, it was different, like he was daring the other boy to look at him and uncover as much as he could…because Dae couldn’t do it himself, and as strange as it was for him, he trusted Kael to do just that.
Dae only noticed after he had spoken that his training partner was looking a little fatigued. He put a hand on his arm, with a concerned glance to where his chest was rising and falling faster than it usually did. He didn’t want to make it obvious, Dae could tell, but he knew what it looked like when Kael took his magic a little too far, he’d seen it enough times for this to be a familiar sight, but concerning none-the-less. He didn’t like to see Kael this way, mostly because he knew how the feeling of losing control could leave you sick to your stomach. He did it far too much, since he was still working on getting control of his power in the first place. He was instantly rewarded for his words by the smirk that graced Kael’s features…maybe he should flirt with his training partner a little more often if he was going to get that sinful face as a response to it. Of course…what followed that solidified the decision to flirt a little more…
His heart practically soared as Kael’s hands pulled his face forward and their lips met in a shocked kiss. He hadn’t seen that coming, but he wasn’t about to complain. Dae was too surprised to react for a moment, but as Kael pulled him closer by his belt loops, he began kissing back enthusiastically. His hand that had since fallen from Kael’s shoulder, returned, fisting the fabric of his shirt as his lips moved earnestly against Kael’s. His free hand moved up to run briefly through that hair that Daegan adored. It fell back to his side as Kael pulled away, but only slightly. A blush warmed Dae’s cheeks and he looked down at his feet before glancing back up to Kael’s eyes ”good is an understatement.” |
he said quietly, unable to stop his face from beaming. He tilted his head a little, blue eyes twinkling, ”I’d started to wonder if that would ever happen….” [/div] Ten thousand friends to make an ecstasy of motion word count: 672 outfit: here. notes: that one was faster <3

Warmness overcame his arm and Kael looked downwards to see Dae’s hand resting there. He looked back up at the other boy, noticing the concern that’d washed over him so suddenly. Kael didn’t like that look; he didn’t like concerning other people, even the people who should be concerned. Alec was the master of this; he was such a worry-wart that Kael had actually yelled at him a few times, which he also didn’t like doing, but sometimes the words just spew from one’s mouth. He was a big boy now, and very capable of handling himself. Other people needn’t be worried for him. It was uncomfortable to have someone watching you, expecting you to fall flat on your face. His demonic father surely must have been one of high standings, otherwise people wouldn’t look at him expectantly and Magnus wouldn’t be so persistent in his control of his magic. It was one of the main reasons he was practicing his magic more diligently as he grew older. He’d learned to recognize the concern and cynical stares and he didn’t want it; he didn’t want peoples’ pity. He’d lived perfectly fine without it before and he was certain he was capable of living the rest of his long years without it.
But then again, Dae had seen this side of him just as many times as Magnus or Alec had. He’d been training beside him for how many years now? Hiding his exhaustion was just a stupid idea at this point; Dae wasn’t an idiot, he was observant, probably more so than Kael himself. They’d seen each other fail and reach their limits so many times now that Kael had lost count. It was one of the reasons Kael felt so comfortable around the other warlock. He knew of Kael’s limitations, knew his flaws and quirks, and yet he still accepted him, still locked gazes with him every now and then. It was when he did so that Kael’s focus blurred and everything Magnus was saying/teaching was literally going in one ear and out the other. No, there was no denying his feelings towards Dae and he knew that. It was because he knew that he took out his sexual frustrations out on pretty mundanes every now and then, only when they asked for it. Kael might be charming and allusive, but he was no sadist, not unless they swung that way.
But all the pretty mundanes’ make-out sessions couldn’t even come close to being compared to the single, exaggerated kiss he’d forced Dae into. As their lips touch, he felt electrocuted, sending shivers down both their bodies, willing them to draw closer. With a start, Kael realized that Daegan was kissing him back fervently and fisted the material of his shirt. Why was he fisting it when Kael was giving him the option of ripping it off? No bother. One step at a time. Kael wasn’t a very patient person, but he could wait a life time for Daegan. If that wasn’t devotion, Kael didn’t know what was. Hands ran through his inked hair and Kael responded by snaking his hands up further under his shirt, up to his chest. He was ecstatic when he felt the smiles behind their kisses, heard the soft moans escape both their lips. His body was pleasantly on fire, but he pulled away when he realized that most of this heat was coming from his oxygen-deprived lungs. It was in moments like these when he kinda wished he was a vampire.
A blush crept up to Daegan’s face and Kael’s heart swelled. Awww! Again, they locked eyes and Kael found himself lost in Dae’s, trying to read his expression and reaction. “Good is an understatement,” he said and Kael’s trademark smirk once again returned to his face. He chuckled lightly and tilted his head around Dae’s, brushing his lips against the sensitive skin of his ear, feeling the heat elevate from the other boy’s face. “I’d started to wonder if that would ever happen…” Well this didn’t suit Kael’s fancy. He paused, bringing his head back around so that their gazes would meet again. A slight frown replaced his earlier smirk, a dash of concern and a sprinkle of disappointment playing in his features. He thought about what to say for a moment and when he was certain of what was to be said, his face softened, the frown turning into a neutral, thin line. “You should make your desires more clear,”
he said, willing him to take charge. It was about time Daegan got out of this funk of his and Kael remained unmoving until he showed some confidence.
