He dreamt of an extravagant party, one not hosted by Magnus, or himself. It was the wildest experience he’d ever seen, even in a dream. He was there, for some reason dressed more formally than the party called for and across the room stood Magnus, Alec, and Daegan, the closest thing he had to a family. They looked like they were having a good time and although the party was amazing and the decorations were awe-inspiring, Kael himself was not having a good time. He made his way through the crowd, shouting their names and receiving no answers. By the time he reached them, the scenery had changed. Instead of a nice celebration, there was a city on fire. It was not New York City, but it might has well been by the amount of still corpses lying on the ground. He was in a place he did not recognize: tall buildings that gleamed like glass and rolling, silent green fields. It was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen, even when it was all up in flames.
A sound sleeper was one thing Kael was not. He woke up in a cold sweat and looked around. With relief, he saw he was still in his bedroom, under the same colorful sheets and in the same, dingy loft. His breathing calmed, he calmed, and then he looked at the alarm clock sitting on his nightstand. It read two-fifteen A.M. and Kael automatically groaned. This was the third night in a row he had this dream. Each time, it was the same routine: from party to carnage, and each time, Kael could not interpret its meaning. Perhaps it was just a silly dream brought on by nerves, but ever since Magnus told him it was possible for a warlock to dream the future, he found he couldn’t let it go. He’d contemplated on telling Magnus about it, but every time, he told himself it was a stupid idea. To get him worried over nothing. The place he’d dreamt of was probably all in his head, outside of harm’s reach. And just like every other time, Kael forced himself back to sleep.

[/blockquote][/blockquote]The blaring sun in his eyes told him that it was nearing at least seven o’clock. Well, that was just too early for Kael—and usually not for the rest of the household—so with a flick of his finger, he shut the blind, smiled in his sleep, and then conked out. Half of his body was overhanging the mattress, but in his desperate tiredness, Kael found he didn’t care or notice. Several pillows—Kael liked to sleep with about six or seven, depending on his mood that night—were on the floor as was his silky comforter. The only sources of warmth Kael had directly on his body were his jammies and a light sheet.
A soft thud is what he felt next in his subconscious sleep, followed by a low, soft rumbling. Chairman. Kael grumpily rolled over in an attempt to throw the cat off his mattress, but to no avail. After living with Magnus for so long, the cat got smarter, Kael supposed. So instead of rolling off the bed like Kael had wanted him to, Chairman hopped over his legs and curled up in the crook of Kael’s neck in stubborn aggression. And because he was sitting so adamantly on a crinkle of blankets, Kael couldn’t roll over again. Damn cat. Though the boy had to admit, the rumbling from his purring did feel quite nice.
